Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor U3417W Review – Graphics Editors Take Note

The Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor U3417W is the successor to the brand’s own UltraSharp U3415W, in which the latter was released last year. This time around, it doesn’t bring about much in terms of new features, but it does have a more pronounced curve, which might throw off some whereas as others might absolutely adore it. It also has side-mounted USB ports as well. But aside from the changes on the outside, it improves on color and grayscale performance, and what’s surprising about this newer model is that it offers a powerful audio system, which is something that you wouldn’t normally see (or hear) packed into a monitor.

The Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor U3417W Brings an Excellent Audio System as Part of the Mix

For its looks, the Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor U3417W looks very similar to its predecessor. Both monitors use a black-and-gray yet bezel-free cabinet, and both of them have curved IPS panels with a WQHD (3,440 x 1,440) pixel resolution. Perhaps the biggest difference to discern the two right off the bat is that the newer model has a more pronounced curve than the predecessor. It now sports a 1,900R curve as compared to the U3415W’s 3,800R.

The panel is surrounded by a 16.9-pound cabinet, and all of it is supported by a stand that will offer 26-degrees of tilt, 3.5-inches of height adjustability, and 60-degrees of swivel. There are also VESA mounting holes for wall mounting which can be found at the back. The display packs four function buttons, a Power switch, and the down-firing speakers that are embedded within the lower bezel.

Out of the box, the display performance is already astounding. Colors appear to be uniform across the board, and they are all evenly saturated. In other words, colors are neither too “cool” nor too “warm” as it is evenly displayed. This means that graphics editors and creators will get an absolute kick out of this. It takes the guess work out because if you’re going to put, say a particular shade of red into the image, then you will get that exact shade of red.

While it excels in the graphics department, the Dell UltraSharp 34 Curved Monitor U3417W is no gaming monitor. While pixel response is pretty acceptable, there will be some tearing noticeable, and there will also some ghosting artifacts that will be seen in some darker scenes while playing videogames. Hence, if you’re a graphics designer or an image editor, then this is the monitor to get. But if you’re looking for a display to play games with, its best to turn your wallet elsewhere.
