Asus ROG G501VW Review – Portable Gaming Goodness

Unlike other gaming laptops that tend to be overly large and bulky, the Asus ROG G501VW is quite the opposite. All the gaming goodness can be found in a truly portable, thin, and light package, and all of it can be found in a more reasonable price point.

The Asus ROG G501VW is One of the More Portable and More Affordable Gaming Laptops You Can Find

If you’ve seen the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501, then chances are the design for the Asus ROG G501VW won’t surprise you. This is the Zenbook Pro UX501’s gaming counterpart as it shares a similar aluminum build. Furthermore, it even shares its hardware specifications. It has an anodized brushed aluminum body, along with a black paint job that is matte-ish to achieve the gaming look. However, this design choice also means that the material is literally a fingerprint magnet.

The ROG G501VW has a vertical brush finish, which complements the entire design. When talking about its sturdiness, there’s not much to complain about. There is also a plastic bezel that does not look out of place, but there are those that would rather see a metal bezel instead.

This particular gaming laptop uses the company’s own Hyper Cool Technology, which is basically just an independent dual fan system. This system keeps both the GPU and the CPU under comfortable temperatures. The vents can be found in between the display hinge, and it is pleasingly hidden and kept out of sight but it does serve its purpose well.

As for the ports, it has all the ones a gamer would generally need. There is one HDMI port, a USB Type C port, a power jack, and a USB 3.0 port found on the left. On the right, there are two more USB 3.0 ports, one SD card reader, and a microphone/headphone jack combo port.

As mentioned earlier, this particular gaming laptop does not support the big and bulky characteristics like others. It sports a 15.6-inch display and it is of the matte IPS panel variety. It offers very good viewing angles, and it is quite bright with pretty good color saturation. The laptop even has the ROG gaming center app that allows you to tweak certain display settings at your disposal.

Powering the Asus ROG G501VW is the Core i7 6700HQ processor which can handle all tasks, gaming or otherwise, with much ease. That is mated to 16GB of RAM, and the graphics are handled by an Nvidia GTX 960M graphics card. While this graphics chip might keep serious gamers away, it will still be able to lure in casual gamers or those who are content with medium-level graphics on games.
