Self-driving vehicles, despite still being seen to be within the early stages of its kind of technology, is now making waves, but that doesn’t mean that it would be immediately be available to everyone; still, that’s not something that the guys over at Comma.ai, and their product, which is the Comma One, would say. With this box installed into your vehicle, it will add autopilot-like abilities towards many standard vehicles.
The Comma One Looks Like an Ordinary Box But Gives Autonomous-Like Features to Your Car
Comma.ai is the automotive startup company responsible for the creation of the Comma One. The firm was founded by George Hotz, and the announcement that the company was working on this “box” was revealed earlier this year. Now, the company is planning to launch the product by the end of this year, according to a report from TechCrunch. Once it goes on sale, this system will be available for $999, but it should be known that those interested in purchasing it will have to shell out an extra $24 per month for the subscription of the software.
If you’re hoping that the Comma One System will make your car fully-autonomous, it doesn’t work that way. However, it will add autonomous-like features to your standard vehicle, and these include the ability to automatically accelerate, change lanes, and brake while along the highway.
The box is encased in a vibrant green plastic, and the only addition it will add to the car in terms of hardware are camera sensors. As for more information as to what’s happening on the road, this green box will use radar systems, which are more commonly found on higher-end vehicles in order to aid them with regards to intelligent cruise control. Hence, this new product will just be initially compatible to a small number of car models.
There is a looming question as to how well the system works. To answer that, Hotz told the following to TechCrunch: “It’s about on par with Tesla Autopilot.” It is also clear that the founder is not thinking much about his company’s competition as he adds the following statement: “If you’re looking to Mobileye to build the software of the future – don’t.”
There are, of course, safety worries that are now encircling the Comma One, even when the product is not yet out on the market. After all, there are numerous concerns with regards to the safety of Tesla’s Autopilot system because of instances wherein the vehicle crashed onto buildings, and even on people.
