While there are mobile phone manufacturers that give their blood, sweat, and tears into creating their products, folks over at MIT, more specifically those found within the institution’s Self-Assembly Lab, are now working on a new project – a phone that can build by itself. This is according to a report from Fast Codesign wherein it states that the phone will be able to, quite literally, assemble itself right in front of your eyes.

So how does the phone made by the people over at the Self-Assembly Lab at MIT assemble itself? The concept is actually pretty simple; the device will come in six parts, and it will require a tumbler, along with a bit of programming so that it will be able to, you guessed it, assemble itself properly. It basically means that the parts that are placed within the tumbler will be shaken around at the right speed until the items will be locked together. The entire process will just take less than a minute.
The entire procedure is similar to how proteins work its magic in forming cells, and in fact, that is the entire point of this phone. The MIT Self-Assembly Lab is trying to create the things that we’ve learned about such as atoms, planets, and cells, and then they’re trying to implement those into things that we, as humans, create.
This particular idea for assembling phones might even end up as a cheaper alternative as compared to how we create handsets of today. As a matter of fact, this process is so much easier as compared to the automated assembly techniques that are constantly being used today.
The team on this project has been working on this concept since the year 2013, and they have been tinkering around with the idea for approximately one year now (at the time of writing). Even though the concept is pretty low-budget and simple to do, the team does think that it can be scaled in a more massive scale for mass production at some point.
However, the concept that is being made possible by the folks at MIT is not without its own set of worries. For instance, there is some worry about the parts getting damaged within the process. However, the team is already considering this and have lined up the tumbler with foam in order to prevent that from happening. Also, it is reported that they are working with even better solutions to achieve this.
