Developer United Front Games is a modestly sized company with a fairly decent reputation, they’re not big and well-known companies like the others but they make great games; one such game that rose to popularity is the critically-acclaimed open world action sandbox game Sleeping Dogs. Everything seems well and good for the development studio after the latter’s success working as a development collaborator for other games such as Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, as well as Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
At the Time of Writing, United Front, the Studio Behind Sleeping Dogs, are not Addressing Questions
Among collaboration projects, United Front Games, the studio behind Sleeping Dogs, also developed ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet Karting, and Disney Infinity 3.0. Currently the studio is working on a game called Smash + Grab and is available for early access at Steam. Despite the game being less than a month old in Steam early access, it is also affected by the company shutdown and now the game is not available in Steam anymore. The shutdown was such as surprise that the studio didn’t show any signs of it in the past weeks; it even had a free weekend for Smash + Grab to promote it.
A source from the studio confirmed on Kotaku Australia that they have indeed closed down but didn’t say a word about how or why they are closing their doors. The Sleeping Dogs Developer even had a cancelled spin-off for Sleeping Dogs called Triad Wars which is supposedly a multiplayer crew or gang based action game set in the same environment as Sleeping Dogs. Triad Wars’ cancellation at the start of 2016 was the only hint of the company’s struggle, it was supposed to be the sequel to the original game but became a spin-off hoping to get the fans of its predecessor in on the bandwagon but it didn’t catch on.
Founded in 2007, United Front Games is a fairly new game company and had few games that reached high ratings as Sleeping Dogs. The company is keeping silent about their status for the past years which results in the sudden closure being a surprise to fans of the game. Company closures are never easy, with many developers working on the studio losing jobs, most of them former developers from EA Black Box, Rockstar Vancouver, Radical Entertainment, and Volition Inc. to name a few but these developers are notable because they’re known to have released open world setting games which helped make Sleeping Dogs a solid game from prior experience.
